Creamy Turmeric, Ginger and Cinnamon “Tea”


steam-rising-from-cup-of-hot-tea-475x600Feeling under the weather? Detoxify your system while enjoying a warm, creamy “tea” made with healing spices. At first I was really scared of drinking turmeric, but it actually tastes very earthy, comforting and sweet when mixed with raw honey, ginger and cinnamon. I drink this at night to soothe my nerves and give me a boost of antioxidants before sleeping. Make sure your spices are organic and the honey raw.

 

1 cup unsweetened soy, almond or rice milk
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground turmeric
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1-2 tbsp raw honey
Sprinkling of dried lavender flowers (optional)

You can do this one of two ways. The first way is with the microwave.  Microwave the milk for 3 minutes, in increments of 1 minute at a time. Plant based milks tend to foam and boil over in the microwave when heated at high temps, so watch it carefully as it heats up. When heated swirl in honey, then fill a tea bag or tea sack with the cinnamon, ginger and turmeric, add to milk and steep for a couple of minutes, and gradually release the spices into the milk and stir. I usually do this by making a small tear in the top of the tea bag and as it becomes saturated with moisture, the bag tears more easily.

You can also make it on the stovetop.  Heat milk in a small pot and whisk in spices once it gets hot. Again, be careful to make sure it doesn’t boil or foam over, or even burn. Once heated, pour into a mug and swirl in honey and enjoy.
